The 1997 SL500 La Costa edition

30 eye-popping SL500s

January 2008

My research on the R129 chassis SLs (1990-2002 US) has turned up a number of unique special edition cars with very low production numbers. I covered the fairly well known "Silver Arrows" of 2002 in a prior newsletter and will be presenting information on these other special models in future newsletters as I'm able to gather information and images.

I'll begin this series with a look at a largely unknown special edition of the SL500, the "La Costa" SLs constructed in 1997 to commemorate Mercedes-Benz's sponsorship of the "Mercedes Championship" PGA golf tournament at the La Costa Resort and Spa played January 6-10, 1997.

Announced January 10th, 1997, the $5,000 package included:

  • AMG "Sport" package
  • Special Calypso Green paint
  • Black and Calypso Green leather
  • Special badging and gearshift insert
  • Eucalyptus wood trim

  • Custom floormats
  • "Plus Two" 18" wheel/tire package
  • Heated seats
  • Xenon headlamps
  • Multi-contour seats

Over the top Calypso Green, the visual
signature of the "La Costa" edition.

Buyers of the cars also received a commemorative La Costa box set which included a special car cover, embossed leather portfolio, license plate, key fob, and certificate of authenticity. Each dealer in southern California received one La Costa edition and three examples were retained for promotional purposes. Two additional cars were given away, one as a sweepstakes award the other donated to the "Devine Design" charity auction.

Sport package standard on all "La Costa" editions.

18" "Plus Two" wheel/tire combination.

Frankly, I've never seen one although a La Costa edition will be virtually impossible to miss on the road and may require dark glasses to observe up close. The images are of a car that was for sale last year and what prompted my investigation. Does anyone know of a La Costa edition? We would love to see more images of this zingy SL500!
