When Lee Klamner purchased his 1974 450SLC a few years ago his intent was to place something interesting in the garage to prompt his wife to take up driving. You see, she had never shown an interest in driving an automobile, any automobile. Lee felt that if she saw the cool Thistle Green SLC, she just might feel like slipping into the green leather driver's seat and taking the wheel to begin her driving experience, albeit many years later than most of humanity.

And you thought there were no MBZ Cabriolets between
the 1971 3.5 Cabriolet and the 1993 300CE Cabriolet! |
But after a year of unsuccessfully prodding her to take the wheel, he resigned himself to the fact that she simply didn't want to join the masses on the roads of California. Frankly, after certain particularly aggravating days of driving in the SF Bay area, I really can't blame her.

| Open SLC a fairly harmonious shape. |
So Lee had to decide what was to be done with the SLC. He had always wanted an SL but selling the SLC wouldn't generate enough funds for an SL. But this fellow is a pragmatic and very handy guy. The epiphany that led to a topless SLC probably occurred after walking past the hack saws in his workshop on his way out to the SLC in the garage.

He'd always wanted an SL convertible, so why not create an open SLC? 4 hours and $50 worth of vinyl/foam/snaps later Lee had created what you see here: an SLC Cabriolet sans convertible top! Very cool. Yes, he did it the hard way: by hand using a hack saw! Bravo!
By the way, it's for sale for a paltry $3,900! If you have interest you can contact Lee at: klamner@yahoo.com . |
